What should you know about swine fever?

People may use this phrase to describe a high temperature during an illness, or they may be referring to swine influenza. A temperature alone cannot identify its cause. The timing of the fever, other symptoms, recent travel, contact with unwell people, medicines, and existing health problems all help a clinician interpret it.

Fever is part of the body's response to infection, but it can also arise from inflammation, medication reactions, or heat-related illness. Conditions such as acute bronchitis, a common cold, COVID-19, or chickenpox can include fever; fever does not by itself confirm any one condition.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear light clothing while you monitor how you feel. Follow the label or a clinician's advice before taking a fever-reducing medicine, especially if you are pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, take other medicines, or are caring for a child. Do not combine products that contain the same ingredient.

Record when the fever began and note associated symptoms such as cough, rash, vomiting, pain, or breathing changes. Avoid close contact with vulnerable people while you are unwell, and wash your hands often.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading rash. Prompt medical assessment is also sensible when fever persists, returns after improving, causes dehydration, or occurs in a very young infant, an older adult, or someone with a weakened immune system.
