What should you know about swelling under eyes and rash on face?

The thin skin around the eyes can swell with irritation, allergy, rubbing, infection or inflammation. A new cleanser, cosmetic, hair product, medicine or eye treatment may cause Contact Dermatitis. Dry, itchy, recurring patches can fit Atopic Dermatitis. A raised, migrating itchy rash may be Hives, while scaling or sharply defined areas can have other explanations such as Psoriasis, Heat Rash or a Drug Rash. These appearances overlap, so a photo and examination are useful.

Stop newly introduced cosmetics or fragranced products near the area and avoid rubbing or scratching. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, keep hands clean, and use only products already known to suit your skin unless a clinician advises otherwise. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic or anti-inflammatory creams close to the eyes without medical guidance. Note the onset, exposures, medicines and whether the rash is spreading.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, faintness or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Arrange prompt assessment for eye pain, vision change, pain with eye movement, fever, marked warmth, pus, blisters or swelling mainly on one side. A new rash after a medicine also deserves prompt clinical advice.

Ask whether the pattern suggests Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Hives or a Drug Rash, which products to pause, and whether the eyes themselves need examination.
