Swelling on the Hand Near the Wrist: What to Know

The location matters: swelling over the back of the hand may be related to a tendon or joint, while swelling close to the wrist crease may involve the wrist joint or a fluid-filled cyst. A fall or direct blow can cause a sprain or a distal radius fracture; rheumatoid arthritis can cause warmth, stiffness, and swelling in several joints. Hand swelling is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so the pattern, tenderness, movement, and injury history help guide evaluation.

Rest the hand from gripping and lifting, keep it raised when comfortable, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods during the first day or two after a minor injury. Remove rings before swelling increases. Do not force wrist movement or massage a visibly injured area. A clinician may check circulation, sensation, strength, and range of motion, then decide whether imaging is useful.

Seek urgent care for a visibly deformed wrist, an open wound, numb or blue fingers, severe pain after a fall, or inability to move the hand. Arrange prompt medical review if the area becomes hot and red, swelling spreads, fever occurs, or symptoms are not settling. Ongoing morning stiffness or swelling in other joints also deserves an appointment.
