Swelling throughout the body during pregnancy

Pregnancy changes fluid balance and can slow blood return from the legs, so feet and ankles may swell gradually. Widespread swelling involving the hands, face, or eyelids is less typical of simple dependent swelling, particularly if it develops quickly or does not improve with rest.

Pre-eclampsia can present with sudden swelling and may also cause a severe headache, vision changes, pain below the ribs, nausea, or feeling unwell. Blood pressure and urine checks help clinicians assess the situation. A symptom pattern cannot establish the diagnosis on its own.

Tell your maternity team about whole-body swelling the same day, even if you feel otherwise well. While waiting for advice, rest in a comfortable side-lying position, avoid prolonged standing, wear loose clothing, and note when the swelling began and which areas are affected.

Drink normally and continue prescribed medicines unless a clinician tells you otherwise. Do not use water tablets, detox products, or herbal treatments to remove fluid. Keep rings and tight footwear off if fingers or feet are enlarging.

Seek prompt maternity assessment for sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain under the ribs, vomiting, or feeling unusually ill. These symptoms can accompany pre-eclampsia.

Call emergency services for chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, or a painful hot leg that is much more swollen than the other. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or breathless.

Ask whether you need blood-pressure and urine checks, how often your symptoms should be monitored, and which changes require an overnight call. Ask whether any existing medical condition or medicine could be contributing to the swelling.
