Swelling in thighs in pregnancy

Pregnancy increases the body's fluid volume, and the enlarging womb can make it harder for blood to return from the legs. This may cause a heavy or tight feeling in both thighs that varies with activity and improves with rest.

Swelling is not a diagnosis by itself. A clot is more concerning when one leg changes quickly and is painful, warm, red, or tender. Headache, visual disturbance, or sudden swelling elsewhere can occur when pre-eclampsia presents and should be checked by a maternity professional.

Alternate sitting, standing, and gentle walking. When resting, support your legs and avoid tight waistbands or socks. Ankle pumps can be useful during sitting, provided movement is comfortable and your clinician has not advised restriction.

Keep a simple note of which side is affected, how quickly the change occurred, and whether there is warmth, redness, or tenderness. Avoid self-treating with diuretics or pain medicines that have not been cleared for pregnancy.

Arrange urgent assessment for new one-sided thigh or leg swelling, especially if the area hurts, feels hot, looks red, or becomes difficult to walk on. Emergency symptoms include sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or severe dizziness.

Call your maternity service promptly for sudden swelling of the hands or face, severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, or a strong sense that you are unwell.

Ask how quickly you should be examined, whether a leg scan is needed, and what warning signs to watch for at home. You can also ask whether your usual exercise, rest position, or compression wear should change.
