Is Swelling in Pregnancy Normal?

Short answer
Gradual swelling of the feet and ankles is often normal in pregnancy, but sudden or marked swelling needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Gradual swelling of the feet and ankles is often normal in pregnancy, but sudden or marked swelling needs medical assessment. Swelling, also called oedema, may become more noticeable later in pregnancy and can be worse after standing, walking, or in warm weather. It commonly improves after resting with your legs raised.
What pregnancy swelling can mean
Pregnancy changes increase the amount of fluid in your body. The growing uterus can also slow the return of blood from the legs, allowing fluid to collect around the ankles and feet. Both legs may look puffy, and shoes or rings may feel tighter by the end of the day. Mild swelling alone does not diagnose a condition, and many people with it have an uncomplicated pregnancy.
Swelling is more concerning when it appears quickly, is clearly greater on one side, or affects the face and hands. A painful, warm, or red calf can point to a blood clot, while sudden swelling with headache or vision changes can occur with pre-eclampsia.
Ways to ease everyday swelling
Take regular breaks if you stand for long periods, and rest on your side or with your feet raised when comfortable. Gentle walking and ankle movements can support circulation. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid tight straps around swollen areas. Keep drinking fluids normally; restricting fluids is not a safe way to treat pregnancy swelling.
Do not start water tablets, herbal remedies, or compression garments without checking with your maternity clinician. Mention swelling at your antenatal appointments so your blood pressure and urine can be assessed when appropriate.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling suddenly increases, especially in your face or hands, or if it comes with a persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, nausea, or feeling unusually unwell. These symptoms can be associated with pre-eclampsia, which needs medical review.
Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or coughing blood. Get prompt assessment for swelling in one leg with calf pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness. If you are unsure how quickly to seek help, call your maternity unit or local emergency service and describe the symptoms and how fast they developed.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
You could ask: Is the pattern and location of my swelling expected for this stage of pregnancy? Should I check my blood pressure or urine? Which changes should make me call the maternity team, and whom should I contact outside appointment hours? Are support stockings suitable for me, and how should they fit?
