Swelling in one leg after pregnancy

After pregnancy, hormone changes, reduced movement, delivery-related procedures, and the body’s changing fluid balance can affect the legs. A minor strain can also cause local swelling. However, a clot in a deep vein may present with swelling, heaviness, aching, warmth, or redness in one leg, and it cannot be ruled out by appearance alone.

Postpartum health checks should include the timing of the swelling, whether it is worsening, recent mobility, and any chest symptoms. Do not assume that an absence of severe pain makes the swelling harmless.

Arrange prompt assessment through your maternity service, doctor, or urgent-care pathway. Until advised, avoid deep massage of the leg and do not start leftover medication. Keep a note of when symptoms began and mention whether you recently had a long period of immobility, surgery, or a difficult recovery.

Use emergency services immediately for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, faintness, confusion, or collapse. Contact a clinician urgently for rapidly increasing one-leg swelling, calf or thigh pain, warmth, redness, or new difficulty walking. A postpartum headache, visual change, or severe upper-abdominal pain also warrants urgent review because serious postpartum conditions can overlap.
