What should you know about swelling in hand nerves?

The swelling may come from an injury, inflammation, fluid build-up or a problem higher in the wrist or forearm. A distal radius fracture can produce swelling and nerve-related sensations after a fall or impact. Rheumatoid arthritis may inflame several hand joints and make fingers feel stiff, puffy and difficult to move. Notice whether one hand or both are affected, which fingers feel numb, and whether symptoms change with wrist position or activity.

Remove tight rings, watches and bracelets before swelling increases. Rest from gripping and keep the hand raised when comfortable. Gentle finger movement can help prevent stiffness, but stop if it increases pain, tingling or weakness. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease recent swelling for short periods. Do not tightly wrap the hand or place weight through it if an injury is possible. Arrange an assessment if swelling does not settle, sensation remains altered, or hand function is reduced.

Seek urgent care for a hand that becomes rapidly more swollen, pale, blue or cold, or for severe pain, new loss of movement or worsening weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed after significant trauma, especially when the hand looks deformed. Fever, spreading redness, drainage or feeling very unwell can signal infection. Sudden neurological symptoms affecting the face, speech or one side of the body require emergency help.

Ask what might be irritating the nerve, whether you need an examination or imaging, and which movements should be limited. Mention any injury, new medicine, medical condition, numb fingers, night symptoms and changes in grip.
