Swelling in fingers during pregnancy

Pregnancy can increase fluid in body tissues, and heat or prolonged hand use may make rings feel tighter. Mild swelling that changes gradually and affects both hands may be part of this process. Finger swelling can also make gripping, typing, or bending the joints uncomfortable. The appearance of swollen fingers does not identify a diagnosis by itself; the speed of change and symptoms elsewhere help your clinician decide what to check.

Remove rings early if they feel tight, before swelling makes them difficult to take off. Rest your hands raised on a cushion, open and close your fingers gently, and change position during repetitive tasks. Keep hands cool in warm conditions and avoid tight bracelets or gloves. Continue normal hydration unless your maternity team has advised otherwise. Do not take medicines or use supplements for swelling without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden or pronounced swelling of the fingers, hands, face, or around the eyes, especially with a severe headache, visual disturbance, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help for breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, or a hand that becomes very painful, pale, blue, cold, or weak. A clinician may check blood pressure, urine, circulation, and other findings.

Ask whether both hands show a pregnancy-related pattern, how quickly you should report worsening, and whether your rings or work activities need adjustment. Ask which hand exercises are safe for you and whether blood pressure or urine checks are needed today.
