Swelling Behind the Knee Cap: What It Can Mean

A feeling of fullness at the front or back of the knee may occur with a Baker's Cyst, knee bursitis, osteoarthritis, gout, or a meniscus tear. An ACL tear can produce swelling after a twisting injury and may be accompanied by a feeling that the knee gives way. Pain, warmth, limited bending, locking, bruising, and the timing of the swelling are useful clues. A clinician may examine the knee and decide whether imaging or fluid testing is appropriate; the swelling alone cannot identify one condition.

Reduce activities that increase pressure or twisting, and keep the leg comfortably elevated when resting. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort for short periods; protect the skin and stop if it irritates you. Gentle movement within a comfortable range can prevent stiffness, but do not force a deep bend or massage a newly swollen area. Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, returns, or limits walking. Joint Aspiration may sometimes be considered when excess fluid needs evaluation or relief.

Seek urgent medical help if the knee becomes hot and red with fever, you cannot bear weight after an injury, the joint suddenly locks, or the calf becomes painful and swollen. New numbness, a pale or cold foot, or rapidly increasing swelling also needs prompt attention. For milder symptoms, book a routine review if movement remains restricted or the cause is unclear.
