What should you know about swelling after dissolving lip filler?

Dissolving a Hyaluronic Acid Filler usually involves injections of an enzyme into treated tissue. The needle, local inflammation and the body's response to the enzyme can all contribute to puffiness or tenderness. Swelling may also reflect the original filler treatment, irritation, bruising or infection. The appearance of the lips can change as swelling settles, so early symmetry is not a reliable guide to the final result.

Follow the aftercare instructions from the qualified clinician who performed the treatment. Keep the area clean, avoid pressing or massaging it unless instructed, and use a cool compress wrapped in clean fabric for short periods if this was recommended. Avoid adding more filler or using another injectable treatment until the tissue has been reviewed. Keep a record of when swelling began and whether it is improving, stable or spreading.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if swelling is increasing, one area becomes very painful, the skin turns pale, grey or dusky, or there is blistering, discharge, warmth or fever.
