What should you know about sweaty feet during winter?

Short answer

Sweaty feet during winter are often caused by warm, poorly ventilated footwear or excessive sweating, but persistent moisture can irritate skin and should be assessed if it brings other changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common winter trigger
Warm socks and closed footwear that trap heat and moisture
Skin care
Dry between the toes and rotate footwear until fully dry

Why cold weather may not stop sweating

Thick socks, insulated boots, and shoes worn indoors can hold heat around the soles. The feet may sweat inside the shoe even while the surrounding air is cool. Some people have plantar hyperhidrosis, so the soles sweat in response to nerve signals rather than outdoor temperature. Dampness can soften the skin between the toes and encourage itching, peeling, odor, or Athlete's Foot.

The [Excessive Sweating](/symptoms/excessive-sweating/) guide explains when sweating is more than a normal response to heat or activity.

Make winter footwear more breathable

Rotate shoes so each pair can dry fully, change socks after they become damp, and dry between the toes after bathing. Choose moisture-wicking socks and avoid wearing tight, non-breathable footwear for long periods. Do not use strong products on broken or inflamed skin. If these measures are not enough, a clinician may discuss [Prescription Antiperspirant](/treatments/medical-dermatology/prescription-antiperspirant/) or [Iontophoresis](/treatments/laser-and-energy/iontophoresis/).

When to arrange an examination

Book an appointment if sweating continues in cool, comfortable settings, disrupts work or sleep, or comes with sudden changes elsewhere in the body. Seek prompt care for painful cracks, spreading redness, swelling, pus, severe itching, or fever. Persistent peeling or odor may need assessment for Athlete's Foot rather than treatment as simple moisture.

Useful questions

Could my boots or socks be trapping too much heat? Do the skin changes suggest Athlete's Foot? Would an antiperspirant or iontophoresis plan suit the soles, and how should I protect irritated skin?
