Sweating but no fever: possible explanations

Short answer
Sweating without a fever can result from heat, activity, stress, medicines or hormonal changes, while infection remains possible without a measured temperature.

Why sweating may happen
Sweat cools the body, so warm weather, exercise, thick clothing or anxiety can explain it without fever. Some medicines, low blood sugar and hormonal changes can also trigger sweating. A thermometer reading does not rule out illness, especially early in an infection or in someone who has taken fever-reducing medicine. A common cold, COVID-19, acute bronchitis or cellulitis may bring other clues such as cough, sore throat, breathlessness, rash, pain or feeling unwell. Brucellosis and other less common infections need consideration when symptoms persist or follow relevant exposure.
What to do at home
Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer when symptoms occur and write down the time, activity, room conditions, medicines and other symptoms. Rest in a cooler space, replace fluids, and change damp clothing. Avoid sharing towels if you have a rash or suspected infection. Contact a clinician if sweating keeps returning, soaks night clothes, disrupts sleep, or comes with cough, a wound, swollen skin, weight change or unusual fatigue.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, a rapidly spreading painful rash, stiff neck, severe dehydration, or a child who is unusually sleepy or struggling to breathe. A normal temperature does not make these warning signs safe to ignore.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, glucose levels, hormones or an infection could explain the episodes. Mention recent travel, animal contact, new skin wounds, cough, night sweating and the exact temperature readings.
