Sweat rash in the groin area for females: what to know

Heat rash can cause prickling, itching, redness and small bumps where the upper thighs or outer vulval skin stay warm and damp. Exercise, tight clothing, pads, shaving irritation and prolonged contact with sweat can aggravate the skin. Burning with urination, unusual vaginal discharge, odour, sores or deep pain are not typical clues to simple sweat rash and may indicate a separate vulval or vaginal problem.

Wash the external skin with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Change damp underwear, choose breathable loose clothing and avoid scented wipes, sprays, douches, harsh scrubs and shaving until the skin settles. Keep products out of the vaginal canal. Seek medical care for sores, blisters, marked swelling, pus, fever, severe pain or redness that spreads quickly. Arrange a review for unusual discharge, strong odour, painful urination, pelvic pain or symptoms that do not improve with gentle external care. A clinician can examine the skin respectfully and separate heat rash from infection, dermatitis or other vulval conditions.

Ask whether the rash is limited to external skin, whether a product or medicine could be irritating it, and what cleanser or treatment is suitable. Mention discharge, odour, urinary symptoms, recent hair removal, menstrual products, sexual exposure and pregnancy if relevant.
