Short answer

To treat mild sweat rash, cool the skin, reduce moisture and friction, cleanse gently, and avoid products that trap heat.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First measures
Cool, cleanse gently and dry carefully

Heat, moisture, rubbing and fragrance
Review needed
Persistent, spreading or painful rash

Why these steps help

Heat rash develops when sweat and warmth irritate or block sweat ducts. It may cause prickling, itch, redness and small bumps in covered or folded areas. The skin can take longer to calm if clothing rubs it or if creams, oils or dressings keep it damp. A rash that is very sore, scaly, ring-shaped or oozing may have another cause and may need a different treatment.

Treatment at home

Cool the area with a comfortable environment or a clean cool cloth, then pat it dry. Shower after heavy sweating, change damp clothes and choose loose breathable layers. Avoid scratching, fragranced washes, greasy ointments and tight coverings. If skin is dry or chafed, a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) is appropriate. A [Topical Corticosteroid](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) may be recommended for selected inflammatory rashes, but the product, strength and site matter. When to seek care

Arrange an appointment when the rash persists despite cooling and careful skin care, spreads, returns often or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly increasing redness, pus, severe pain, swelling or skin that feels hot and tender. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from infection, allergy, eczema or a fungal rash and match treatment to the diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis best fits the rash, how long to try the recommended treatment, and which products are safe on the affected body site. Mention recent heat exposure, sweating, new cosmetics or detergents, and anything already applied.
