What should you know about sweat irritation rash?

Short answer
Sweat irritation rash is a skin reaction to moisture, heat, salt and rubbing, sometimes worsened by products or sensitive skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it happens
Sweat can leave skin damp and salty, while heat and clothing increase rubbing. The result may be red, dry, rough, tender or itchy skin, especially in folds and under close-fitting fabric. Fragrance, deodorant, detergent or a new textile can add a separate irritant or allergic reaction.
The appearance can overlap with Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies or Drug Rash. These conditions can require different care, so a rash that persists or has an unusual pattern deserves assessment.
Gentle skin care
Rinse away sweat with lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Change damp clothes promptly and choose breathable, loose-fitting layers. Keep folds dry and reduce contact with rough seams, tight bands and perfumed products.
Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser on dry skin if it does not sting. Avoid applying several new creams at once, because this can make the trigger harder to identify. If a product reliably precedes the rash, pause it and record the timing.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if the rash is spreading, recurring, very itchy, painful, cracked, oozing, crusted or warm, or if you develop fever. Seek advice sooner when it affects the face, eyes or genitals, follows a new medicine, or fails to improve after the irritant and dampness are removed.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern suggest irritation, Contact Dermatitis, infection or an inflammatory condition? Which cleanser and moisturiser suit this area? How should I prevent flare-ups when heat, exercise or work causes sweating?

Questions people ask
Is sweat itself always the cause of an irritation rash?
Not always. Sweat may weaken the skin barrier, while friction, products, fabric or another skin condition contributes to the reaction.
Should you scrub away sweat rash?
No. Scrubbing can increase irritation; gentle cleansing followed by patting dry is kinder to inflamed skin.
