What should you know about swamp fever?

People may use this phrase for a fever during an infection, but it does not identify one particular illness. Fever can occur with respiratory infections, skin infections, or other conditions. For example, [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/) can cause fever with cough, while [Cellulitis](/conditions/cellulitis/) can cause fever with a painful, warm area of skin.

The pattern matters: note when the fever began, whether it returns, and which symptoms accompany it. A thermometer reading can help, but how unwell you feel also matters.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear light clothing while you are feverish. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for any fever medicine, and check before giving medicines to a child. Keep a note of temperature readings, medication times, rashes, breathing changes, and urine output.

Arrange a clinical review if the fever is not settling, keeps returning, or comes with a new rash, worsening cough, pain when urinating, or a localised tender swelling. Avoid close contact with vulnerable people until you understand whether an infection may be contagious.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, a seizure, a stiff neck, confusion, dehydration, or a rapidly spreading rash. A baby, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a weakened immune system may need earlier advice even when symptoms seem mild.

Ask what may be causing the fever, whether an examination or testing is needed, which warning signs to watch for, and when normal activities are safe. Mention travel, animal contact, new medicines, sick contacts, and any long-term conditions.
