What should you know about surgical wart removal?

Warts are rough skin growths caused by certain types of human papillomavirus. Many are managed with topical treatment or methods that freeze, heat, or destroy the affected tissue. A clinician may consider a surgical approach when a wart is persistent, painful, repeatedly injured, or unsuitable for other methods. Depending on the area, removal may involve cutting, scraping, or another procedure, with local anaesthetic for comfort. The treatment may leave a wound or scar, and the virus can remain in nearby skin, so recurrence is possible.

Do not cut, shave, or pick at a suspected wart yourself, especially on the face, genitals, or near a nail. Tell the clinician about diabetes, circulation problems, reduced immunity, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Keep the treated site covered as instructed, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, nail tools, or footwear. Follow guidance about bathing, activity, and dressing changes. A healing wound can be tender, while friction may slow recovery.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, warmth, or redness is increasing, or if pus, a bad smell, wound separation, or fever appears. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not settle with gentle pressure or for rapidly spreading redness with severe illness. Have a lesion assessed if it changes quickly, bleeds without injury, becomes very dark, or does not behave like a typical wart. A diagnosis matters because some other skin growths can resemble warts.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, why surgery is being considered, which technique is planned, and how the wound will be dressed. Discuss recurrence, scar care, infection prevention, activity restrictions, and whether tissue should be examined after removal.
