What should you know about surgical breast biopsy?

During a surgical biopsy, a surgeon makes an incision and removes a selected piece of tissue or the whole area being assessed. The sample goes to a laboratory, where its cells and other features are examined. A breast lump can have many causes, and a biopsy is a way to identify the tissue type; it does not by itself mean cancer. Your clinician may recommend an ultrasound or another scan to locate the area and may place a marker or use imaging during planning. Ask when and how the result will be shared.

Give the team a complete list of medicines, including blood-thinning medicines, supplements and allergies. Follow their instructions about food, drink and bathing before the appointment. Wear a supportive bra afterwards if advised. Bruising, swelling, tenderness and a small amount of drainage can occur near the incision. Keep the wound clean and dry as instructed, avoid strenuous arm movements until cleared, and take the recommended pain relief. The final laboratory report may guide whether further treatment or monitoring is needed.

Seek prompt medical advice for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, worsening pain, fever, pus, wound opening, or a new change in the breast or arm that concerns you. Breathing difficulty or sudden weakness needs emergency attention.
