What should you know about super itchy throat?

Allergic rhinitis can cause throat itching when mucus drains from the nose, often with sneezing, a runny nose or itchy eyes. A common cold may bring throat irritation with cough, congestion or feeling unwell. House dust mite exposure can produce recurring indoor symptoms. Food allergy is another possibility, especially when itching starts soon after eating and affects the lips, mouth or throat. Dry air, smoke and strong scents can also irritate the throat without causing an allergy.

Sip water or a warm non-alcoholic drink, use a humidifier if indoor air is dry, and avoid smoke, vaping and known irritants. Saline nasal rinsing may help when nasal mucus is contributing, provided the water and equipment are prepared safely. If symptoms match a known allergy, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable. Do not deliberately re-test a food that may have caused a reaction.

Call emergency services for throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness, or trouble swallowing saliva, particularly after eating or taking a medicine. Arrange medical review for a persistent or recurrent itchy throat, fever with marked illness, dehydration, or symptoms that keep worsening. A clinician can distinguish allergy, infection and irritation from the pattern and examination.
