What should you know about super itchy skin while pregnant?

Skin may itch during pregnancy because it is dry, stretched, or more sensitive. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, Hives, and Psoriasis can cause visible inflammation. Scabies can cause marked itch and may affect close contacts. Skin Yeast Infection often involves warm, moist folds, and Lichen Planus has a distinct rash pattern. Itching itself is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so note where it started and what the skin looks like.

Moisturise with a fragrance-free product, take short lukewarm washes, and use a cool compress. Wear breathable clothing and keep nails short. Pause new soaps, detergents, perfumes, or creams if they may be triggers. Ask a maternity clinician, pharmacist, or doctor before using medicines, herbal products, or strong anti-itch treatments, and keep a record of triggers and sleep disruption.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense itch without a rash, prominent palm or sole itching, or itch that worsens at night. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, faintness, blistering, peeling skin, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask what the distribution and rash suggest, whether tests are needed, and which products are appropriate at this stage of pregnancy. Mention household symptoms, recent product changes, pain, fever, and any treatment already tried.
