What should you know about sunflower oil and cradle cap?

Cradle cap is a common form of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It causes greasy or dry scale on the scalp and may extend to nearby skin. It is usually not caused by poor hygiene and often does not bother the baby. Oil can loosen adherent scale, but leaving an oily layer on for long periods may make the scalp harder to clean and can irritate some babies.

The appearance can overlap with eczema, infection, or another rash. Redness beyond the scaly area, oozing, swelling, tenderness, or a baby who seems unwell should not be managed with oil alone.

If your child's clinician agrees, apply a small amount of plain sunflower oil to the scale for a short period to soften it. Massage very gently, wash it out with a mild baby shampoo, and use a soft brush only for loose flakes. Never scratch, scrape, or pull scales from the scalp. Keep oil away from the eyes, nose, and mouth, and test a small area first.

Do not use fragranced blends or essential oils on an infant's skin. If scale is persistent or widespread, a clinician may recommend a suitable emollient or a topical antifungal treatment after confirming the diagnosis. Follow infant-specific instructions rather than adapting an adult product.

Arrange medical advice for spreading redness, cracks, bleeding, pus, crusting, swelling, significant itch, or hair loss. Seek prompt help if the baby has fever, appears unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or seems in pain. A review is also useful when the rash does not improve with gentle washing or keeps returning.

Ask whether the scalp changes fit cradle cap, whether sunflower oil is suitable for your baby's skin, and how long it should remain before washing. Ask which product to use if the scale persists and which warning signs require prompt review.
