Sunburn tan removal: what to know

Short answer
A tan after sunburn fades as affected skin renews, but trying to strip the colour can worsen irritation, so use protection and gentle care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Avoid
- Scrubbing, picking and harsh home bleaching remedies
- Core approach
- Protect the skin and let gradual renewal reduce uneven colour
Why the colour lingers
Ultraviolet exposure can increase pigment production while also injuring the outer skin. After the redness settles, the remaining tan or patchy colour may be more noticeable where the burn was uneven. Peeling does not mean the skin should be pulled away, and a darker tone is not a sign that the skin has become protected. Repeated exposure can add longer-term changes associated with [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/). A clinician may need to distinguish post-inflammatory pigment from another cause of a persistent mark.
Gentle ways to help
Keep the area out of direct sun with shade, clothing and a hat, then use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed on intact skin. Wash gently with lukewarm water and apply a plain moisturiser. Avoid scrubs, brushes, lemon, peroxide, strong exfoliating acids and unprescribed lightening creams while the skin is sore or peeling. Do not pick flakes or blisters. [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can help support the barrier. Once the skin is fully calm, ask a dermatologist before using a pigment treatment or procedure.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe facial swelling, breathing trouble, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration. Arrange prompt assessment for extensive [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/), severe pain, fever, pus or rapidly worsening redness. Book a dermatology review when the colour change persists, spreads, returns without sun exposure, or sits in one spot that bleeds, crusts or changes. More [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) or pain than expected also merits advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour is expected after the burn, when a pigment product could be considered, and how to protect your skin without triggering irritation. Bring a list of products used and note any changes in the mark.

Questions people ask
Does peeling remove a sunburn tan?
Peeling removes damaged surface cells gradually, but pulling skin away can cause injury and prolong colour changes.
Can I exfoliate after sunburn?
Wait until the skin is fully recovered and ask a clinician if the colour persists; exfoliating inflamed skin can worsen irritation.
