What should you know about sunburn skin irritation?

Short answer
Sunburn skin irritation reflects inflammation after ultraviolet exposure; cool the area, protect its surface, and seek care if symptoms are severe or spreading.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why sunburn feels irritated
Ultraviolet light can activate inflammation in exposed skin, producing heat, redness, stinging, tenderness and itch. Tightness and peeling can follow as the surface barrier recovers. Blisters are a sign of more substantial injury, not a reason to scratch or drain them. Skin Redness can be part of Sunburn, while a rash after limited exposure may need assessment for a different light-related reaction.
Reduce the discomfort
Move into shade, apply a cool damp cloth and rinse gently with lukewarm or cool water. Pat dry and use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser; Emollient Therapy may be useful for dryness and tightness. Wear loose clothing, avoid rubbing, and keep the area away from direct sun. Do not apply harsh antiseptics, exfoliants or perfumed sprays. Leave peeling skin and blisters undisturbed. A clinician can advise about Topical Corticosteroids if inflammation remains troublesome.
Warning signs
Seek prompt care for severe or worsening pain, extensive blisters, facial or eye swelling, fever, pus, or redness that keeps spreading. Go urgently for confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty or trouble drinking. Recurrent irritation after brief sun exposure should also be assessed, especially after starting a medicine or skincare product. The terms Skin Blisters and Peeling Skin may help describe the progression.
What to discuss
Ask what is driving the irritation, whether a medicine or product could increase light sensitivity, which cleanser and moisturiser are suitable, and how to protect the area outdoors. Note the exposure time, symptoms and any blistering.

Questions people ask
Why does sunburn itch?
Inflammation and a drying skin barrier can create itch as the skin responds to ultraviolet injury and begins to recover.
Is it safe to scratch an irritated sunburn?
Try not to scratch. Friction can damage the fragile surface, so cool compresses and bland moisturiser are gentler options.
