What should you know about sunburn skin care?

Short answer

Good sunburn skin care means cooling the area gently, moisturising without irritating it, and avoiding more ultraviolet exposure until healing progresses.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cool the skin
Use a damp cloth or cool shower
Moisturise
Apply a bland product to slightly damp skin
Protect
Cover the area and avoid more sun

What sunburn does to skin

Sunburn damages the outer skin through ultraviolet exposure and causes an inflammatory response. The affected area may feel hot, tight, sore or itchy before it starts to peel. Blisters signal deeper injury and need extra protection. Sunburn is distinct from long-term Sun-Damaged Skin, although repeated exposure can contribute to ongoing skin change. The shade of the skin does not reliably show how much care is needed.

A simple care routine

Cool the skin with a damp cloth or a comfortably cool shower, then pat it dry. Apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy product while the skin retains some moisture. Wear soft, loose clothing and keep the area covered from sunlight. Do not scrub, peel flakes, break blisters or use perfumed products on tender skin. Rest and drink regularly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether pain relief or Topical Corticosteroids are appropriate for your situation.

Signs that need assessment

Contact a clinician when pain is severe, blisters cover a broad area, or swelling affects the face or eyes. Seek urgent care for faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, breathing problems or difficulty keeping fluids down. Medical advice is also sensible when redness continues to intensify, wounds look infected, or a child has a significant burn. Related descriptions of Skin Redness, Skin Blisters and Peeling Skin may help you communicate the changes.

Useful questions

Ask which moisturiser ingredients to choose or avoid, how to protect a blistered area, whether any regular medicine increases light sensitivity, and when you can resume normal skincare. Tell the clinician when the exposure occurred and how the symptoms have changed.

Questions people ask

Can I exfoliate peeling sunburn?

No. Let loose skin shed naturally and keep the area moisturised; scrubbing can worsen irritation and expose delicate skin.

What should I put on sunburn?

A bland moisturiser can reduce dryness and tightness. Avoid fragranced or harsh products, and ask a clinician about treatments for marked inflammation.
