Sunburn rash treatment: what to know

A sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness and itching can appear after the exposure, while fluid-filled blisters suggest deeper skin injury. Peeling later reflects the body shedding damaged surface cells; it is not a signal to pull the skin away.

Move out of direct sun and use a cool, damp cloth or a brief cool shower. Pat dry, then apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp; an emollient can support the skin barrier. Drink fluids according to your usual needs and wear loose, soft clothing.

Do not burst blisters, scrub peeling skin, use ice directly, or apply products containing alcohol or strong fragrance. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a topical corticosteroid is suitable for a particular area; do not place steroid products on broken skin unless instructed. Avoid more sun until the skin has settled.

Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, chills, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or fainting. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if the eyes are painful or light-sensitive, the face is markedly swollen, or a child has a substantial burn.
