Sunburn peeling treatment

Peeling follows injury to the outer layer of skin. The exposed surface can be dry, sensitive and more vulnerable to friction, heat and further ultraviolet exposure. Cool the area with a damp cloth or a brief cool shower; avoid ice directly on skin. Pat dry and apply a bland, fragrance-free emollient. Loose cotton clothing can reduce rubbing. Do not use scrubs, strong acids, retinoids, perfumed products or adhesive dressings on raw skin. A clinician may discuss a [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) treatment for selected inflammation, but do not self-start steroid cream on broken or infected skin. Leave blisters intact and keep any open area clean.

Seek medical advice when the burn is widespread, blistered or increasingly painful, or when redness spreads beyond the original area. Fever, pus, a foul smell, dizziness, faintness, vomiting, confusion, eye symptoms or difficulty drinking are warning signs. Facial burns close to the eyes and burns in very young children deserve prompt review.
