Sunburn around the eyes: what to know

Eyelid skin is thin and easily irritated. Sunburn may cause redness, tenderness, tightness, swelling, or later peeling around the eyes. The surface of the eye can also become irritated by bright light or exposure. Red eyelid skin does not by itself show whether the eye is involved, so symptoms such as pain inside the eye, light sensitivity, discharge, or blurred vision matter.

Move into shade, use a clean cool damp cloth over closed eyelids, and avoid rubbing. Do not place ice directly on the skin or apply facial acids, fragrances, makeup, or unapproved creams close to the eye. Wear a hat and sunglasses outdoors. A plain moisturiser may suit nearby intact skin, but keep products out of the eye. Seek urgent medical or eye assessment for vision changes, severe eye pain, pronounced light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eye, marked swelling, chemical exposure, or blistering on the eyelid.
