What should you know about sunburn and white spots?

A sunburn injures the outer skin and triggers inflammation. As the surrounding skin darkens or the injured surface sheds, areas that did not tan evenly can look pale or white by comparison. Pigment-making cells can also become temporarily less active after inflammation, leaving lighter patches that gradually blend as the skin recovers.

White spots that were present before the burn, keep multiplying, have a fine scale, or form in a pattern may have another explanation, such as a superficial fungal rash or a longer-term pigment disorder. A photo taken in good light can help you compare their size and appearance over time, but it cannot replace an examination.

Move out of direct sun, use cool compresses, drink fluids, and leave blisters intact. Apply a bland moisturiser or emollient gently once the skin is no longer hot and wet; avoid scrubbing, picking, bleaching products, and fragranced products on the affected area.

Cover the skin with loose clothing and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed, healed skin. Do not deliberately tan the surrounding skin to disguise the contrast, because additional ultraviolet exposure can deepen pigment changes and cause further injury. A clinician can assess persistent or scaly patches and decide whether testing or a prescription treatment is suitable.

Seek urgent medical help for extensive blistering, severe swelling, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or signs of infection such as worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, or fever. Eye pain or vision changes after sun exposure also need prompt assessment.

Arrange a dermatology review if the white spots are spreading, itchy, scaly, painful, sharply defined, or still clearly visible after the burn has settled. Earlier review is sensible when the changes recur after sun exposure or affect the face, hands, or another highly visible area.

Ask whether the pale areas look like post-inflammatory pigment change, peeling, or a separate rash; whether any scale or blistering changes the assessment; and which moisturiser, sun protection, or prescription treatment is appropriate for your skin.
