White skin and sun spots: what to know

Solar lentigines commonly stand out against lighter surrounding skin and may occur on the face, shoulders, arms, or hands. They can be round or irregular, with a fairly clear edge, and may appear as one mark or several. Small white spots after sun exposure can have a different explanation, such as reduced pigment after inflammation or another skin condition, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.
