Sun spots on the feet: what to know

Sun spots are flat areas of extra pigment caused by cumulative ultraviolet exposure. The tops of the feet can receive substantial sun, especially with open footwear, but a dark mark may also follow friction, an injury, inflammation, a mole, or another skin condition. Marks under or around a toenail have additional possible causes. Location, duration, border, colour, texture, and change over time help guide assessment.

Apply sun protection to exposed feet and use footwear that covers the skin when practical. Avoid cutting, filing, burning, or applying harsh acids to a spot. Take a dated photograph in good light and compare it over time without repeatedly irritating the area. If a dermatologist confirms a sun spot, options may include a chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment, or cryotherapy for a selected lesion.

Book a skin review for a spot that is new, enlarging, changing colour or shape, uneven at the edge, raised, bleeding, crusting, painful, or persistently itchy. Seek prompt advice for pigment extending around a nail, a dark streak under a nail, or a mark that does not heal. These features do not identify the cause by themselves, but they should not be treated as a cosmetic spot without assessment.

Ask whether the spot is consistent with sun-related pigment, whether the nail or surrounding skin is involved, if monitoring is enough, and which treatment and aftercare fit the location.
