Sun rash on neck: what to know

The neck receives direct sun and can also trap heat beneath collars, hair, scarves, or jewellery. A reaction may follow ultraviolet exposure, sweat, friction, fragrance, hair products, or a metal clasp. Contact dermatitis commonly matches the area touched by a product or accessory. Atopic dermatitis can cause itchy, dry patches, while psoriasis may produce a more defined scaly area. A medication or supplement can occasionally make sunlight trigger a rash.

Compare the front and sides of the neck with covered skin. Note whether the rash follows a necklace or spray pattern, and whether it began after a new medicine.
