Sun-damaged skin on the arms: what to know

Forearms and hands often receive incidental sunlight, so repeated exposure can lead to freckles, sun spots, uneven tone, dryness, fine lines, and a leathery or rough texture. Pigment can also follow inflammation or irritation, and melasma is another cause of uneven colour in some areas. A dark mark is not automatically sun damage. Watch for asymmetry, a jagged edge, several colours, growth, bleeding, crusting, or a sore that fails to heal.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed arms and hands, following the label for reapplication. A long-sleeved layer, shade, and planning outdoor time away from intense sun can reduce exposure. Moisturise after bathing and avoid abrasive scrubbing or unlabelled lightening products. If spots or texture bother you, a dermatologist can determine the cause and match treatment to the finding, skin tone, and risk of irritation.

Arrange a skin examination for a new spot that persists, a lesion that changes, or a patch that becomes tender, itchy, scaly, crusted, or prone to bleeding. Prompt review is sensible for rapid change or a non-healing sore. Note the location and appearance so changes are easier to describe. Sun protection remains useful while you wait for an appointment.
