Summer skin rash treatment: what to know

Heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked, while intertrigo affects rubbing, moist folds. Contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Ringworm is a fungal infection, scabies is caused by mites, and a drug rash can follow a medicine. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are inflammatory conditions that may flare with heat, sweat, or friction. These patterns can overlap, so colour alone does not identify the right treatment.

Cool the area, rinse away sweat, pat dry, and wear loose clothing. Stop a newly introduced product that touches the rash and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin is dry rather than wet or infected. Avoid scratching, sharing towels, and applying several medicated creams at once. Antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or anti-parasitic treatment should match the diagnosis; a steroid used on ringworm can change its appearance and allow it to spread. A clinician may ask about medicines, travel, contacts, and the rash's shape and timing.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, severe pain, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or a rash that began after a new medicine. Book a dermatology review when the rash persists, returns, affects skin folds, or causes intense night itching in you or close contacts.
