What should you know about sulfa drug reaction rash?

The rash may be flat, raised, hive-like, or patchy, and it can affect one area or much of the body. It may occur soon after a dose or after the medicine has been taken for a while. Other medicines, viral illness, and skin conditions can produce similar changes. A drug eruption should be considered in context, not diagnosed from appearance alone.

Keep the packet or prescription details and make a list of every medicine, supplement, and topical product used recently. Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for instructions about the next dose. Use only treatments recommended for your circumstances, and keep the skin cool and gently cleansed. Record photographs if the rash is changing, without delaying care.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, confusion, fainting, or severe weakness. Seek urgent medical assessment for fever with a painful rash, blisters, skin peeling, or sores affecting the mouth, eyes, or genitals. A rapidly worsening reaction should not be monitored at home.
