Sudocrem for newborn nappy rash: what to know

Nappy rash develops where delicate skin is exposed to moisture, stool, urine, and rubbing. A barrier can limit contact with these irritants, while a very thick layer may make cleaning difficult. Redness in skin folds, small satellite spots, or a rash that persists can suggest a yeast-related problem rather than simple irritation. Newborn skin can react quickly, so avoid fragranced products and do not use medicines containing active ingredients unless a healthcare professional advises them.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, clean with lukewarm water or a gentle fragrance-free product, and pat rather than rub. Allow short periods of air exposure when practical. Apply a thin protective layer to clean, dry skin and follow the packaging directions. Keep the product away from the eyes, mouth, and umbilical area. Do not put it inside the vagina or anus. Wash your hands before and after each change.

Contact a clinician if a newborn has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or has a rash with blisters, pus, bleeding, marked swelling, or open sores. Arrange review if the rash reaches the skin folds, spreads, or is not improving with gentle care. A newborn who appears seriously unwell needs urgent medical attention.
