What should you know about sudden swelling in pregnancy?

Pregnancy can cause fluid to collect gradually in the feet and ankles, particularly after standing. A sudden change, marked swelling in the face or hands, or swelling that is much greater on one side needs a different level of attention. Pre-eclampsia is one condition clinicians consider because it can affect the pregnant person and baby.

Swelling with a severe headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain under the ribs, nausea, feeling very unwell, or reduced urine is especially concerning. One-sided leg swelling with pain, warmth, or breathlessness also needs urgent medical advice.

Contact your maternity unit, midwife, obstetrician, or urgent-care service today to describe when the swelling started and where it is. Keep a note of headache, visual changes, abdominal pain, breathlessness, and fetal movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are sudden or worsening.

A clinician may check blood pressure, urine, blood tests, swelling, and the baby's wellbeing. Follow the advised plan and take your pregnancy records and medicine list. Do not start a water tablet, restrict fluids, or change prescribed medicine without medical guidance.

Seek emergency help for severe headache, vision loss, severe upper-abdominal pain, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, seizure, or rapidly worsening swelling. Call promptly for reduced fetal movement or one-sided painful leg swelling. Tell the service that you are pregnant.
