What should you know about sudden itchy bumps on skin?

Raised, shifting welts that appear and fade may fit Hives. A new soap, detergent, plant, cosmetic, or fabric can trigger Contact Dermatitis, while intense itching at night or affected household contacts can point toward Scabies. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can cause itchy, inflamed patches, often with dryness or scale. Ring-shaped or spreading areas need assessment for infection rather than steroid cream used without advice. The bumps may also follow bites or heat, so location and exposure matter.

Stop any newly introduced skin product and gently rinse the area with lukewarm water. Use a cool, damp cloth, keep fingernails short, and choose loose breathable clothing. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser may reduce dryness. Avoid scratching, squeezing, and applying several medicated creams at once; these can irritate skin or hide useful changes. Photograph the bumps and note when they began, what touched the skin, recent medicines, travel, heat, and whether anyone else is itchy.

Get emergency help if bumps occur with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, blistering, skin peeling, or eye involvement. Arrange a clinician visit if the eruption keeps returning, disrupts sleep, follows a new medicine, or does not settle with gentle care.
