What should you know about sudden hives on face?

Hives develop when inflammatory chemicals make small areas of skin swell. On the face, the welts may involve the cheeks, forehead, jaw, or around the eyes and can change location as they fade. New cosmetics, hair products, medicines, foods, infections, heat, and pressure are possible triggers, though a clear cause is not always found. Puffy eyelids or lips may represent angioedema, a deeper type of swelling that can occur with hives.

Stop any newly applied cosmetic, cleanser, hair product, or medicine that you suspect, and keep the product packaging for review. Rinse irritating residue gently with lukewarm water; avoid rubbing, heat, and fragranced products. A cool compress may reduce itch. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an oral antihistamine that fits your health history, and do not apply steroid creams near the eyes or lips unless specifically directed.

Get emergency help for tongue or throat swelling, hoarse voice, difficulty breathing, wheezing, trouble swallowing, dizziness, or faintness. Seek prompt assessment if eyelid or lip swelling is increasing, hives recur after a medicine or food, or the rash is painful, bruised, blistered, or accompanied by fever. Facial hives without airway symptoms can still benefit from medical advice when the trigger is uncertain or symptoms continue.

Ask whether the facial changes are hives, angioedema, contact irritation, or another rash; which products and medicines to avoid; and how to manage a future episode. Bring a timeline of meals, medicines, cosmetics, hair treatments, illness, heat, and pressure. Describe any eye, lip, mouth, voice, or breathing changes, even if they have resolved.
