What should you know about sudden hand swelling pregnancy?

Pregnancy can alter fluid balance and make rings or gloves feel tighter, particularly later in pregnancy. Sudden change deserves attention because swelling may also accompany a pregnancy complication. One painful, red, warm, or injured hand may have a local cause. A Distal Radius Fracture can follow a fall onto the hand, while Rheumatoid Arthritis can cause joint swelling and stiffness, usually as a broader inflammatory pattern. The timing, symmetry, pain, and other body symptoms help guide assessment.

Remove tight rings and bracelets before swelling increases. Rest the hand, keep it comfortably raised, and avoid self-medicating without checking pregnancy-safe options with your maternity team. Measure or report blood pressure if you have been told to monitor it, and note headache, visual changes, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, or reduced fetal movement. Contact your obstetric or maternity service the same day for sudden new swelling, especially when it is accompanied by any of these symptoms.

Seek urgent maternity care for sudden swelling of the hands or face with severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, confusion, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent assessment for a cold, blue, numb, deformed, or severely painful hand, or swelling after a fall. Contact your maternity team promptly for swelling that is rapidly increasing, one-sided, or associated with high blood pressure readings.
