What should you know about sudden dark circles under eyes?

The colour may come from increased visibility of blood vessels through thin skin, extra pigment, or a hollow that catches the light. Poor sleep, stress, dehydration, a recent illness, or rubbing the eyes can make an existing tendency look more noticeable. Nasal allergies can cause itching and congestion, which may lead to frequent rubbing and darker-looking skin. Eczema or another irritated skin condition can also affect the eyelids; people with atopic dermatitis commonly experience itchy, dry, inflamed skin.

Sometimes the darkness is a shadow rather than a change in skin colour. Puffiness, facial swelling, or a deeper groove beneath the lower eyelid can alter how light falls across the area. Tear trough hollows may therefore become more apparent after changes in sleep, fluid balance, or lighting. A photo taken in the same light can help you judge whether the colour, swelling, or contour has actually changed.

Avoid rubbing or scratching the area, and pause any new eye creams, makeup, or hair products that may have touched the skin. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser suitable for the eyelids if the skin feels dry or irritated. A cool, clean compress may ease puffiness. Rest, drink fluids according to your usual needs, and manage nasal allergy symptoms with advice from a pharmacist or clinician. Do not apply strong bleaching products or steroid creams around the eyes unless a clinician has prescribed them.

If the change continues, recurs, or concerns you, a dermatologist or primary-care clinician can examine the skin, eyelids, nose, and under-eye contour. Treatment depends on the cause. Options may include care for dermatitis or allergies; contour treatments such as under-eye filler are not appropriate for every type of dark circle and require an experienced medical assessment.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the darkening is clearly on one side and comes with pain, marked swelling, warmth, a rash, discharge, or tenderness. Seek urgent care for vision changes, severe eye pain, sudden swelling of the face, trouble breathing, or a significant injury around the eye. Also arrange a review when bruising appears elsewhere without a clear cause, or when the change does not settle after the trigger has passed.
