What should you know about stress induced hives?

Short answer
Stress induced hives are itchy, raised welts that may come and go, but swelling of the mouth or breathing difficulty needs urgent attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How stress can affect hives
Hives form when skin cells release inflammatory chemicals, producing raised areas that may be pale, pink, or red. Individual welts often change shape or fade while new ones appear elsewhere. Stress may trigger an episode or make itching feel stronger, but food, medicines, infection, heat, pressure, and other triggers can also be involved. Hives are distinct from every other rash, so a changing photo and a trigger diary can help a clinician assess the pattern. Deeper swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands, or throat is called Angioedema.
Ways to calm the skin
Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing or scratching. A fragrance-free moisturizer and a cool compress may reduce irritation. Review recent foods, medicines, infections, heat exposure, pressure, and emotional strain, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. An oral antihistamine may be recommended for suitable patients; the choice and dose depend on age, health conditions, pregnancy, and other medicines.
When it is urgent
Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, a tight throat, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Get prompt medical advice for rapidly spreading hives, repeated episodes, severe discomfort, or swelling that is not settling. A clinician can decide whether the pattern is Hives, Angioedema, or another skin problem and whether prescription treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Could stress be one trigger among several? Should I use an Antihistamine Treatment, and are there medicines I should avoid? How can I recognize dangerous swelling? Would recurring episodes need further evaluation?
