What should you know about stress hives on the arm?

Hives form when inflammatory chemicals make small blood vessels leak fluid into the skin. Stress, sweating, heat, tight sleeves, a watch strap, friction, or contact with a product may occur before the welts appear on one arm. The pattern can provide clues, but it cannot identify the trigger by itself.

Hives often feel itchy and raised, and each welt may shift or fade as other welts develop. A fixed patch with scale, crust, pain, pus, or bruising is less typical of hives and may need examination. Swelling of the hand, lips, eyelids, or deeper skin can occur with angioedema.
