Stress and tension headache: what to know

How the structures involved in Tension Headache differ from normal

Short answer

Stress can contribute to tension-type headache by tightening muscles around the scalp, neck and shoulders, although other causes of headache are also possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What stress and tension headache can feel like

A tension-type headache often feels like pressure, tightness or a band around the head rather than a pulse. It may affect both sides and can sit across the forehead, temples or back of the head. Jaw clenching, prolonged screen use, poor sleep, missed meals and neck strain can add to the discomfort. Stress is one possible contributor, not a diagnosis made from the symptom alone. A new, frequent or changing headache deserves assessment, especially if it interferes with work, sleep or usual activities.

Steps that may ease it

Pause demanding activity and relax your shoulders, jaw and hands. Gentle neck movement, a warm compress, regular water and a quiet break may help. Eat at regular times and take screen breaks with your eyes level with the display. Notice whether deadlines, poor sleep or clenching precede the pain; a simple headache diary can reveal patterns. Use pain medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, because frequent use can itself keep headaches going. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can help distinguish tension headache from migraine or another cause. Read more about [Headache](/symptoms/headache/).

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for a sudden, severe headache, or headache with weakness, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, fever, repeated vomiting, vision loss or trouble speaking. Arrange a clinical review for headaches that keep returning, steadily worsen, follow a head injury, wake you from sleep or require pain medicine often. Do not assume stress is the explanation when the pattern is new or unusual.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern fit tension-type headache, migraine or another cause? What warning signs should prompt urgent care? How can I manage neck strain, sleep and pain medicines safely?

Questions people ask

Can stress cause a headache?

Stress can contribute to muscle tension, altered sleep and jaw clenching, all of which may accompany headache; it should not be assumed to explain every new headache.

When should a tension headache be checked?

Arrange assessment when headaches are new, recurrent, worsening, unusually severe or affecting daily life, and seek urgent help for sudden severe pain or neurological symptoms.
