What should you know about strep throat treatment?

Strep throat is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, red or coated tonsils, and swollen neck glands can occur, but these features can overlap with viral illnesses and tonsillitis. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether a throat test is appropriate. Antibiotics target bacteria; they do not treat viral sore throats. Treatment also includes fluids, rest, and suitable pain or fever relief. Do not share leftover medicine or use another person's prescription.

Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are significant, persistent, or you have been exposed to confirmed strep throat. Take any prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and stay home while feverish or feeling unwell. A pharmacist or clinician can check whether a pain reliever is suitable with your health conditions and other medicines.

Seek urgent medical care if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, you are drooling, your voice becomes markedly muffled, or one side of the throat swells quickly. Contact a clinician promptly for dehydration, a persistent high fever, worsening pain, a rash, or symptoms that return after improving. Children who are unusually sleepy, struggling to drink, or breathing abnormally need prompt assessment. These warning signs need attention regardless of whether the cause is strep throat or another throat condition.

Ask whether an examination or throat test is needed, which symptom-relief medicines fit your circumstances, when you should expect improvement, and what to do if a prescribed antibiotic causes a reaction. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines you already take.
