Strep throat symptoms and runny nose: what to know

Strep throat is caused by bacteria and commonly presents with a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender glands at the front of the neck. A runny nose, cough, hoarse voice, or irritated eyes fits a viral cold more closely. The presence of nasal symptoms does not prove that strep throat is absent, because more than one process can occur and individual symptoms vary. Tonsillitis may also cause a sore throat and swollen tonsils, but an examination is needed to separate possible causes.

Drink regularly, rest, and use saline nasal drops or spray if they are suitable for you. Warm fluids may soothe the throat, while soft foods can be easier to swallow. Arrange a GP consultation when throat pain is severe, fever develops, swallowing becomes difficult, or symptoms are not settling. A clinician can decide whether a throat test is useful. Avoid using someone else’s antibiotics, because they will not help a routine viral infection.

Get urgent help if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow saliva or fluids, swelling is rapidly worsening, your voice becomes unusually muffled, or severe pain is concentrated on one side. Seek prompt advice for dehydration, persistent fever, or deterioration after initial improvement. The runny nose should not delay care when a throat or airway warning sign is present.
