Strep throat symptoms and cough: what to know

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat. Its common presentation includes a sore throat that can make swallowing uncomfortable, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender glands in the neck. Cough, runny nose, hoarseness, or red eyes point more towards a viral throat infection, although symptoms can overlap. A cough does not rule out strep throat, and symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. Tonsillitis can produce similar throat findings, so an examination and, when appropriate, a throat test help guide treatment.

Arrange a GP consultation if the sore throat began suddenly, swallowing is difficult, fever is present, or the neck glands are painful, especially when cough and cold symptoms are limited. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid sharing cups or close face-to-face contact while unwell, and wash your hands after coughing. Do not start leftover antibiotics; a clinician can decide whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate after assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, severe one-sided throat pain, confusion, or marked difficulty opening the mouth. Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, symptoms worsen, or you cannot keep fluids down. These warning signs need assessment regardless of whether the cough is mild.

Ask whether your symptom pattern needs a strep throat test, whether the cough suggests another infection, and which pain or fever measures are suitable for you. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether swallowing or breathing is affected, and whether you have taken any medicine.
