Strep throat and a stuffy nose: what to know

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. It more often causes a sudden sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, and tender swollen glands in the neck. A blocked or runny nose, cough, hoarseness, or red eyes fit more readily with a viral illness, although symptoms can overlap.

Having a stuffy nose does not rule strep throat in or out. A person can have nasal congestion alongside throat symptoms because of a viral infection, allergies, irritation, or more than one illness. A clinician may consider the pattern of symptoms and examine the throat and neck before deciding whether a strep test is useful.

Strep throat commonly presents with a painful throat and may include fever or swollen glands. Nasal congestion by itself is not a reliable way to identify the cause. Avoid sharing antibiotics or using leftover medicine, since antibiotics do not treat viral infections and the wrong medicine can cause harm.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Saline nasal spray or drops may ease congestion; warm drinks and a humidified room can also make the throat and nose feel less irritated. Follow the label for any pain or fever medicine, and check with a pharmacist if the medicine is for a child, pregnancy, or a long-term condition.

Arrange a GP consultation if a severe sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, or difficulty swallowing is present, especially when nasal symptoms are limited. If testing confirms strep throat, take prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, severe dehydration, marked drowsiness, or rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. These signs can indicate a problem that needs prompt assessment.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, a fever persists, throat pain makes drinking difficult, or you are unsure whether the illness needs testing. Children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may need earlier advice.

Ask whether your symptom pattern suggests testing for strep throat, whether nasal congestion points to another infection or allergy, and which treatments are suitable for your age and health history. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether you have fever or swollen glands, and whether swallowing fluids is difficult.
