Strep throat skin rash treatment

Strep throat can be accompanied by a fine, rough-feeling rash known as scarlet fever. The rash may begin on the chest or tummy and spread, while the throat can be painful and fever may occur. Other rashes can come from viruses, irritation, or an allergic reaction, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. A clinician will consider the rash alongside the throat examination and other symptoms.

Arrange an assessment rather than treating a suspected bacterial rash with creams or antibiotics from home. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Keep skin cool, use gentle unperfumed products, drink regularly, and avoid scratching. Tell the clinician about medicine allergies, because a rash that appears after a new medicine may signal a reaction and needs different advice.

Seek urgent help if the rash comes with facial or tongue swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Prompt medical review is also needed for a child who is unusually sleepy, cannot drink, or is becoming rapidly more unwell. A fever with a spreading rough rash should be assessed without delay.

Ask what pattern the rash has, whether a throat test is needed, which skin products are safe, and how to recognise a medicine reaction. Mention when the rash began, any new medicines, and whether swallowing or drinking has become difficult.
