The organism that causes strep throat

Group A Streptococcus is a type of bacterium that can infect the throat. Strep throat may cause a sore throat, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender swollen glands in the neck. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness can point toward a viral illness, but symptoms overlap and cannot identify the organism reliably.

A healthcare professional may inspect the throat and use a rapid test or swab. Testing helps separate bacterial infection from illnesses where antibiotics will not help. It also supports a treatment choice suited to your history and allergies.

Rest, drink regularly, and use soft foods or warm fluids if swallowing hurts. Wash hands and avoid sharing utensils while unwell. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are substantial or do not improve, especially when fever or swollen glands are present.

If a clinician prescribes Antibiotic Treatment, take it exactly as directed and ask what to do if you develop a rash, vomiting, or another reaction. Do not take antibiotics left over from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, rapidly worsening swelling, or a muffled voice. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of which organism is responsible.
